What makes Grand Archive TCG Collector Rares collectable

Set in the world of Cambria, it pairs artwork in a Japanese illustration style with mechanics that will feel familiar to players of Western competitive games, including a separate material deck from which champions level up during play. The game was crowdfunded on Kickstarter in 2021, where it raised just under a million US dollars, and reached shops on 28 April 2023.

Its first set, Dawn of Ashes, exists in two forms. The 1st Edition was a Kickstarter exclusive, sent only to backers and including twelve Collector Ultra Rares that appear nowhere else. The Alter Edition followed as the retail release and is printed to demand, so ordinary cards stay affordable for players. Since then the publisher has released a steady stream of sets, including Fractured Crown in August 2023 and Abyssal Heaven in March 2025, the latter sold as a 1st Edition booster.

Collector interest centres on the game's Collector Rare tier. A Collector Super Rare (CSR) uses an overframe treatment, where the artwork breaks out of the card frame, and carries the artist's signature as a gold foil stamp. A Collector Ultra Rare (CUR) goes further, with its own unique gold signature and a serial number stamp. Collector Promo Rares are reserved for prizes at special events. These cards are deliberately scarce; in Fractured Crown, for example, the publisher indicated roughly one CSR per fifteen boxes.

That design, which keeps playable cards cheap while concentrating scarcity in signed, serialised art cards, has made Grand Archive popular with adult collectors who like anime art and want a clear high end without inflating the cost of playing. Champion cards in collector treatments are the most valued, and Kickstarter-only 1st Edition material carries the extra appeal of a limited, backer-only print.

What drives the value

  • Collector rarity: CSRs and especially serialised CURs sit far above every other tier.
  • Champions: collector versions of named champions such as Merlin, Lorraine and Silvie are the most sought after.
  • Edition: Kickstarter-exclusive Dawn of Ashes 1st Edition cards had a limited, backer-only distribution.
  • Pull scarcity: collector rares are inserted at low rates, in some sets around one per many boxes.
  • Artwork and artist: the overframe art and gold artist signature make each collector card a display piece.
  • Competitive play: cards used in top decks add player demand to collector demand.

How to spot the real thing

  • A CSR has overframe artwork that spills beyond the frame and a gold foil artist signature stamp.
  • A CUR adds a serial number stamp and a signature stamp unique to that card.
  • Retail listings mark collector cards with (CSR), (CUR) or (CPR) after the card name; check the set name, as 1st Edition and Alter Edition versions are priced separately.
  • Compare against the official Grand Archive card database at gatcg.com before buying high-value singles.

Questions people ask

Who makes Grand Archive TCG?

Grand Archive is made by Weebs of the Shore, an independent American studio. It was crowdfunded on Kickstarter in 2021 and released to shops in April 2023.

What is a CSR in Grand Archive?

CSR stands for Collector Super Rare. These cards have overframe artwork and a gold foil artist signature stamp, and they are inserted into packs very rarely.

What is the difference between CSR and CUR?

Both are collector rarities with overframe art and gold signatures. A Collector Ultra Rare also has a serial number stamp and a signature unique to that card, making it scarcer.

What is Dawn of Ashes 1st Edition vs Alter Edition?

The 1st Edition was sent only to Kickstarter backers and includes twelve exclusive serialised CURs. The Alter Edition is the retail version sold in shops from 28 April 2023 and is printed to demand.

Is Grand Archive an anime card game?

Yes, its artwork is anime-inspired, set in the fantasy world of Cambria, while the rules borrow ideas from Western competitive card games.

Are Grand Archive cards worth collecting?

For collectors, value is concentrated in the signed and serialised collector rares and in Kickstarter-only 1st Edition cards. Ordinary cards are kept affordable by design, so check sold listings for specific collector cards.
