Are Pokémon cards a good investment? What to know first
Short answer: some cards have risen a lot, many haven't, and prices can fall. Treat it as a hobby you enjoy first. This isn't financial advice.
What moves prices
- Popularity of the Pokémon and the artwork
- How hard the card is to pull, and reprints
- Condition and grading
- Overall demand, which can cool quickly
The risks
- Liquidity — selling can take time, and fees and postage eat into returns.
- Reprints — new printings can lower the price of older ones.
- Fakes and resealed product.
- Damage and loss — storage and insurance cost money.
Questions to ask
- Would I still be happy owning this if it never went up?
- Do I know the recent sold price, not just asking prices?
- Can I afford to lose this money?
