How to beat big Pokémon ex: a counter-play guide
Pokémon ex in Standard average 267 HP, compared with 98 for regular Pokémon. Here's how to take them down.
1. Hit the Weakness
Doubling damage means a 134-damage attack can one-shot an average ex. Check the defender's Weakness box and the matchup chart.
2. Trade with single-Prize attackers
Your 1-Prize Pokémon for their 2-Prize ex is a winning trade. See Prize cards explained.
3. Plan two hits
If you can't one-shot it, make sure your next attacker can finish the job. Our knock-out maths pages show what damage you need for every HP value.
4. Survive its big attack
A Pokémon with more HP than the ex's best attack can take a hit and swing back.
5. Catch it out of position
High Retreat Costs make big Pokémon hard to move. Pulling one into the Active Spot can leave it stuck.
